About
My name is Joey and welcome to my Team In Training site. I set this site up to fund raise for my favorite cause, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. I am active with the Team In Training program. More like addicted really. I am currently doing about 3 events each year, all to raise much needed funds to help end blood cancers like Leukemia & Lymphoma.
I am involved with TNT because it gives me the chance to do something much bigger than me. I get to help save lives, and I get to have fun and meet new people while doing.
In 2007 I decided I needed to do something for others. My wife was going to a TNT information meeting for the Nike Women’s Marathon and needed me to take her and watch our newborn son. It was the last thing I wanted to do, but I decided to be a good husband and tag along.
Halfway through the meeting Laura came out and said “hey, you should come check this out, they have a bike training program you might like.” I had been talking about getting into shape (somehow any muscle I had found it’s way to my stomach), so I went in to check it out. I left with a bike jersey and fundraising binder, all set to do the El Tour de Tucson century ride. I started with TNT because I wanted to get in shape and help a good cause at the same time. Turns out fate handed me a few other reasons.
A few years ago my brother-in-law Claude who lost his battle with Lymphoma , leaving behind his wife and four children. In October 2009 my friend Mel Kakes, husband to my close friend Lola, lost his life to Leukemia. It’s heart wrenching to lose someone you love and is loved by so many to a disease like this, so I am now committed more than ever to helping cure blood cancers. I know I’m a 40 year old ex-smoker, and yes, 100 mile bike rides, triathlons and half-marathons hurt (a lot), but it’s nothing compared to the pain my friends and family have felt these last few years because of Leukemia & Lymphoma. I have met friends like Gene who is still fighting his fight. My friend Betsy lost her daughter Alex to Leukemia. There was a little girl and her mom that came up and thanked me for helping fight for her and others like her. I have had no shortage of reasons to train and raise money. I get to help saves lives every time I send my fundraising email, go for a bike ride, or design and sell a t-shirt.
I have now done 5 century rides, 1 triathlon, 1 half-marathon, and have triple crowned. This year I am coaching for the first time. We have a great team of about 15 of us going to Lake Tahoe in June for the America’s Most Beautiful Bike Ride. After that, I’m thinking of doing the Nation’s Triathlon and will be doing my 4th El Tour de Tucson in November.
I want to thank you for visiting. If you are here to buy a Team In Training t-shirt, I thank you for your support.
Joey
